I decided to redo my deviantID today, and inadvertently ended up with something perfect for this contest! Which is such a happy accident, because I was really excited about it and agonizing over what I should enter... problem solved. XD
On the left is my 2011 deviantID (stock background removed).
I'm a huge fan of Evangelion, and completely in love with the new movies, so I made myself an Eva pilot! It was one of the first pieces I did entirely digitally, with my then-brand-new Intuos 4 tablet. Everything was done in Photoshop CS5 using default brushes.

Can you believe there was only a year between these??? I have learned so much in that year, and man does it show. I have a much better grasp on lighting; the shadows are less block and the light sources less random, and I'm getting pretty handy at highlights and reflections. Along with a few bright white highlights from highly reflective surfaces, there's also reflected light from the environment and the glowy pieces. I don't think I'm quite "there" yet with my lighting, but holy cow, what a difference. I'm also finally settling into a style that's really my own. My art is coming so much more naturally to me, and I love it. This piece was also done entirely digitally, but the sketch and line art were done in Paint Tool SAI. That line stabilizer is a godsend. ;_; Color, effects, and background were all done in Photoshop CS5 using mostly default and a few custom brushes.
